Welcome to the Friends Corner
This page will be continuously updated to give you current information about the workings of the organization formed to support the Orcas Island Public Library.
The Library Fair is coming closer and closer. Now we can remind you that it is NEXT month — the 14th of August to be exact. It is going to be a grand day with tables of donated books for sale, crafts, food and our wonderful Saturday Market all in one convenient location – Village Square. Items for the art auction are currently being collected and displayed in the library for all of us to visit. Perhaps you have something you would donate in this category.
Volunteers have been madly sorting and storing all the wonderful books donated to date. This is still time to bring in books, money for the library OR yourselves to volunteer.
There are many things to do at the Fair and the need for Volunteers continue. Please call Pierrette Guimond at 376-4264 if you would like to be part of this exciting event on Orcas Island. You don't want to do heavy lifting? No problem. You only have a few hours available? No problem. You can't count? No problem. Call and find out what you CAN do to participate. Your contribution will be appreciated and celebrated.
Did you know that all of the books for sale at the Library Fair have been newly donated since the Winter Book Sale in February? We are starting with a new slate and the inventory is growing to include ever so many different types of books. We have fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, psychology, business, religion, do-it-yourself, sports, and cook books. There's even an entirely separate and sizeable section of mystery – paperback and hardback. Art, music, CDs, DVDs, games, health, history, science, government and travel are available. You might find something you didn't even know that you needed!
In our "Other Than The Library Fair" Department, we have two items:
First, we want to share our pride in the fact that the Friends-Sponsored Sunday Hours is very popular. The Library's Board of Directors made the decision to open the Library for these extended hours and the Friends of the Orcas Island Library Board helped with some of the extra costs that came with this decision. You, and many like you, have done your by your presence which makes it all worth while.
Secondly, we would like you to SAVE THE DATE for our Annual Meeting. It will be held Thursday, September 23 at the library. The evening will include appetizers, a short and important business meeting followed by Kim Middleton speaking about our local birds. She teaches the very popular Introduction to Birding as part of the Library's Lifelong Learning classes. More on this later.
