April 2008
Thanks for visiting. We’ve been involved in
so many interesting projects lately that I have to remind myself
to write something on our website about them!
Some of our current
initiatives:
·
English as a Second Language
classes offered at the Library by
Skagit
Valley
College
·
The Crossroads Lecture Series
making plans for the 2008-09 season, besides offering lectures
through this coming May
·
A new TV-type magnifier for books
and magazines donated to the Library by our local Lions Club
·
Sharing information in our
Children’s Room about local preschools and recreational
opportunities for kids
·
Building a homeschooling corner
in our Children’s Room
·
With the help of a citizen
committee, looking at our facility needs over the next dozen
years or so
·
Supporting strong new grassroots
cooperatives such as
Sustainable
Orcas Island
and the Green Business Alliance (for example, visit
wiserearth.org, then search for the keywords Sustainable Orcas)
·
Helping to coordinate the
after-school Orcas Chess Club on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm
(except for the second Tuesday of each month)
·
Implementing a new audio book
service in which cardholders can download recorded books to
their MP3 players via the internet
·
Meanwhile, we are busy keeping
our collection fresh by buying about 4000 new titles each year,
a turnover rate of almost 10% of our collection each year
·
Beefing up our online databases
to support research needs of students and others—ranging from
full-text magazine articles to a vehicle repair database
·
Our ongoing classes as listed on
our website
As always, please share your suggestions
for purchases or new services.
